a NIC (Network Interface Card)

introduction

A NIC is a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) containing a network interface and the clever bits to make it go. The most common and cheapest type is a PCI card from any obscure Asian manufacturer, made for an IBM PC. Cards made in the last two decades run at 10 or 100mbps (megabits per second).
