introduction
You can use FTP to copy files from one host to another. FTP is one of the early Internet protocols, a motorised carriage overtaken by the Model T Ford that is SCP.
Our policy is to disable the FTP server on every LIC host because there are security problems with the FTP protocol. We only enable it where we have no choice. Before you can use FTP to copy files, you must enable FTP transfers to a host.
(from http://www.pcwebopedia.com/TERM/F/FTP.html)
Short for File Transfer Protocol, the protocol used on the Internet for exchanging files. FTP works in the same way as HTTP for transferring Web pages from a server to a user's browser and SMTP for transferring electronic mail across the Internet in that, like these technologies, FTP uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols to enable data transfer.
FTP is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server).
