a building
introduction
A proper data center is a secure underground bunker that is super safe and secure. It is a Bond villain headquarters. Mine is a shed.
In the future we are going to do a lot of work to turn a room into a data centre. For instance, we will make sure it does not turn into a computer sauna and it is not a favourite stop off for burglars. Our future work is safer if we first pick a suitable location for this room.
what it is
A company starting from scratch (no building, nothing) has to complete these steps.
- find the right property to build on
- hire an architect
- hire a builder
- dedicate IT time to managing the project
Following these steps means of course you must already have one building stacked floor to ceiling with hard cash to pay your bills.
I have a pocket containing an anorexic wallet.
I bought a shed for my back garden. It's a fat 10 by 12 foot wooden box. It is:
- an urban facility, near my own L33t headquarters (ie. my house) and employees (ie. me)
- on real estate I already own
- renovation of an existing facility so no new build required
- a bit crap to park near
what it isn't
My shed is not subject to geographical bad karma. It is not
- on a floodplain
- in a tornado or hurricane path
- on a fault line
- near an airport
where it is
My rear garden (that's "my back yard" to our brethren from the U.S. of A).
history
I bought a shed for my back garden. That's really all you need to know.
